Diabetes Education for Pediatric Nurses

Course Introduction:

This diabetes education curriculum is designed specifically for nurses taking care of pediatric patients with diabetes.  The course consists of five interactive modules addressing diabetes and insulin, blood sugar monitoring and carbohydrates, hypoglycemia, ketones, and special circumstances.

There is an optional opportunity to earn 1.5 hours of CE credit by participating in the associated research project, which involves completion of a pretest and posttest (IRB protocol #18393).  This course is sponsored by the Department of Pediatrics and the Clinician Educator Training Pathway within IU Graduate Medical Education.  For questions regarding the curriculum, please contact Lauren Ray (laulogan@iu.edu).

 

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the diabetes education curriculum, nurses will improve their knowledge, skills, and comfort level in taking care of pediatric patients with diabetes who require insulin.

After completing the five modules, you will be able to:

  • Recognize signs of hypoglycemia in a pediatric patient
  • Demonstrate competence in treating a hypoglycemic episode in pediatric patients with diabetes
  • Identify when to check for urine ketones in pediatric patients with diabetes on insulin
  • Feel more comfortable taking care of pediatric patients with diabetes requiring insulin
