Course summary:

Public engagement is a critical component of planning in any community. Engaging the public ensures that ideas, research, conclusions, and recommendations developed by the steering committee are transparent to and meet the needs of the community. Public involvement in the decision-making process also motivates the public to support the plan and helps ensure that your agency effectively delivers community-oriented parks and recreation opportunities.

Course objectives:

After completing this course, learners should be able to:

  • Understand the critical importance of public engagement efforts in master planning.
  • List the roles and influences of key stakeholders and groups involved in public engagement.
  • Outline different strategies to engage the public in system master planning.
  • Describe the pros and cons of each engagement strategy.
