Course Summary

The Universal Design e-course presents an opportunity for parks professionals to develop a knowledge of accessibility from a big-picture perspective. Universal Design goes above and beyond the minimum standards for accessible design and makes sustainability of accessible programs and facilities achievable through implementation of seven guiding principles. This course provides an introduction to the original definition and concepts of Universal Design, its associated seven principles, and their applicability. In addition, the course presents the history, principles, and progress of Universal Design as it applies to the designer, programmer, and the consumer. Students will have an opportunity to apply each principle through built-in course worksheets resulting in Universal Design action plan upon course completion. 

Course Objectives

After completing this course, learners should be able to: 

    • Define Universal Design.
    • Explain the major concepts and guidelines for each of the seven principles of Universal Design. 
    • Describe how Universal Design benefits many different people.

This course is self-paced, allowing learners the flexibility to complete the course as quickly or slowly as they need. 

After completing all course content and activities, you will complete a final quiz to demonstrate your understanding of key course concepts. Upon successful completion of the quiz, you will be awarded a certificate of completion.
