Course summary:

This course discusses the design standards for physical accessibility as requirements for new construction and alterations of the built environment that support public programming in recreation agencies.

Within this course, the learner will be introduced to the history of accessibility legislation; learn how to access, navigate, and use the ADA/ABA accessibility standards; and apply the standards in a variety of built-in exercises.

Course objectives:

After completing this course, learners should be able to:

  • Identify the legislation, regulations, and policies related to physical accessibility.
  • Discuss, as a general overview, the accessibility standards applicable under the ADA and ABA.
  • Discuss how the functional limitations of disabilities are addressed in the accessibility standards.
  • Discuss the most common technical provisions and their application to new construction and barrier removal in existing facilities.

This course is designed for facility managers and park and recreation providers who are interested in gaining a foundational knowledge of the requirements for accessible facilities within federal, state, and local agencies.
