Full course description
This course introduces students to foundational principles of music teaching and learning, including student engagement, classroom management, instructional sequencing, assessment, listening strategies, effective practice, creative musicianship, collaborative learning, and Universal Design for Learning. The credential is designed for high school students and emphasizes practical application and accessibility, equipping students with transferable skills relevant to music education and teaching-adjacent careers.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to apply sound pedagogical strategies to their work in peer collaboration and leadership-related activities at their high schools.
There are eight mini-modules in the course, and it should take approximately 8 weeks to complete. Module topics include:
- Active vs. Passive Listening
- Assessing Learning
- Collaboration in the Music Classroom
- Creativity Through Music Composition
- Designing Learning Experiences (Backwards Design)
- Effective Practicing
- Sequencing Instruction
- Student Engagement: Pacing and Management
