About the Course

The American Medical Association (AMA) released new guidelines for evaluation and management (E/M) codes that were effective Jan 1, 2021. There is now more emphasis on medical decision making or time compared to the previous history and examination components. These changes affect every optometrist in clinical practice and therefore strong understanding of the use of these new codes is critical to patient care providers. This course will comprehensively cover these changes and how to apply them to patient care. In addition, this course will review medical eye codes and when their use may be more advantageous than E/M codes.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand why the evaluation and management changes occurred
  • Understand the medical eye codes and scenarios for their use in compariso to E/M codes
  • Understand how to determine an E/M code using the appropriate interpretation of the problem data and risk
  • Understand how to accurately code common ocular conditions
