Course Introduction

The Mastering Union Leadership course is designed for adult learners who want to master the essential skills and knowledge to lead effectively within union contexts.The course begins with an exploration of the fundamental question, "Just what is a leader, anyway?" and answers the question, "Is leadership a role or a process?" Students will learn about the interplay between leadership and organizational structure, and how to apply leadership and vision in practical scenarios. The course also delves into the dynamics of leadership and power within union democracy, emphasizing the importance of building a culture of union democracy and fostering inclusive organizations. Through these modules, learners will develop the competencies needed to represent and lead their unions with integrity and effectiveness.

This course was designed and developed by the Marquita Walker, Ph.D. interim chair and associate professor in the Department of Labor Studies, School of Social Work. As an Interim Chair and Associate Professor of Labor Studies at Indiana University, I bring over three decades of experience in research and education to the table. My interests lie in studying social stratification, income inequity, poverty, and e-learning as they pertain to workers and workers' education. I have published multiple articles and book chapters on these topics, and have presented my work at numerous national and international conferences.
