Course Introduction
This course is tailored for adult learners who are interested in the principles and practices of grievance handling within labor unions. Participants will learn how to effectively manage and resolve member grievances to comply with labor laws and ethical standards, the step-by-step procedures for handling grievances from initial complaint to resolution, communication skills and techniques for active listening, empathy, and effective dialogue, strategies for mediating disputes and finding mutually acceptable solutions. and best practices for documentation and record-keeping to maintain accurate and confidential records to ensure a fair and transparent process that promotes a positive workplace environment.

Course creator
This course was designed and developed by the Marquita Walker, Ph.D. interim chair and associate professor in the Department of Labor Studies, School of Social Work. As an Interim Chair and Associate Professor of Labor Studies at Indiana University, I bring over three decades of experience in research and education to the table. My interests lie in studying social stratification, income inequity, poverty, and e-learning as they pertain to workers and workers' education. I have published multiple articles and book chapters on these topics, and have presented my work at numerous national and international conferences.
