Special Summer Course - Starts June 1st

Course Overview

This is a special Summer 2023 version of the regular IUHS Independent English 9, First Semester course. It is intended to be completed in 8 weeks, beginning on June 1 and ending on August 1, and will feature rapid grading and enhanced teacher feedback.

This course is designed to help you develop your writing, critical thinking and reading skills. As the first semester of ninth-grade English, it presents a variety of learning experiences designed to develop and reinforce both your knowledge and skill in four fundamental areas: grammar, composition, vocabulary, and literature.

Grammar studies focus on classifications of nouns, pronouns, and verbs with additional attention to their varying forms, proper placement, and usage.

Composition activities include strategies for topic selection and narrowing, establishment of controlling purpose, the creation of effective topic sentences, and the use of supporting details. Particular emphasis is placed on the composition of a variety of paragraph types—description, narration, and explanation, a business letter, and a three-paragraph essay of argumentation.

Vocabulary exercises provide opportunities for language development with attention to word roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Particularly stressed is the accurate and revealing usage of designated vocabulary words in sentences and paragraphs of your own creation.

Literature study sessions present a wide variety of reading experiences, spanning the genres of poems, essays, short stories, and drama. Featured in the context of lesson reading assignments are literary styles, themes, and techniques.
