Full course description
Course Introduction
The Virtual Global Learning (VGL) Toolkit is a self-paced resource for the IU community designed to support instructors who want to integrate Virtual Exchange (VE) and Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) into their teaching. Whether you are exploring the possibilities or preparing to launch a partnership, this course moves from foundational concepts to practical tools that help you design confident, intentional, and globally engaged learning experiences.Across the modules, you will examine the essential components of VE/COIL, develop strategies for collaboration, select technologies that support communication and equity, and learn how to make your design inclusive, accessible, and aligned with your course outcomes.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the core elements of VE/COIL and how they connect to virtual global learning at Indiana University.
- Design icebreakers and collaborative tasks that build trust and foster meaningful intercultural interaction.
- Align VE/COIL activities with assessments that make global and disciplinary learning visible.
- Select and use communication and collaboration tools (e.g., Teams, Google Workspace, Zoom) effectively.
- Apply principles of inclusion and accessibility to ensure all students can participate fully.
