Course Introduction

There are two webinars included in this session. One is titled, Developing Functional Communication in Students with Moderate and Severe Autism Spectrum Disorders. This webinar summarizes how to support the development of meaningful, generalized, functional communication skills in learners with autism. It describes the acquisition, mastery, and generalization of communication skills; highlights the importance of data-based assessment, planning and progress monitoring; and reviews how various evidence-based practices may be used to teach generalized, functional use of skills. The second is titled, Repetitive and Restrictive Behaviors in Autism. The presence of restricted and repetitive behaviors (RBB) and interests remain the least understood characteristic of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The purpose of this webinar is to help professionals understand: (1) the range of RRB in autism, (2) when and how to assess RRB, and (2) key components of a treatment plan to reduce the frequency or intensity of RRB, when appropriate. Case studies guide the discussion.
