Course summary:

In this course, you will learn the importance of park and recreation boards, how the board originates and functions, and how it is structured and governed. You will also learn the challenges you could face as a member and your rights and responsibilities.

Course objectives:

After completing this course, learners should be able to:

  • Determine what makes park and recreation boards unique.
  • Identify the origins and types of boards.
  • Explain the legal constraints regarding the origin of boards.
  • Describe the functions of park and recreation boards.
  • Describe the structure and administration of boards including board meetings, officers and committees, and members' rights and responsibilities.
  • Describe the importance of Robert's Rules of Order and how they are applied to park and recreation boards.
  • Identify what to do if the chairperson acts arbitrarily and capriciously.
