Course summary:

Working as a Park and Recreation Board member can be challenging and rewarding. Success will be measured in whether you are able to accomplish your goals or not. The key to working together and accomplishing your goals is to first understand your role, how you contribute to a larger decision making process, and working effectively with others.

This course builds on the information presented in the first course in the series: Working As a Park Board Member: The Basics. This course is designed to give you the tools and information to be an active participant on the Board, who works cooperatively on behalf of the community where you live and work.

Course objectives:

After completing this course, learners should be able to:

  • Identify the qualities required to be a successful Board member.
  • Determine factors that contribute to the success of the Board as a whole.
  • Describe how effective Board membership is practiced.
  • Explain how Boards are nurtured.
  • Describe the relationship between the agency director and the Board.
