Program summary:

The First-Line Supervisors Management Certificate Program is designed for those new to a supervisory role. This program will help new supervisors understand the knowledge, skills, and abilities that make up competencies and competency frameworks in the parks and recreation field and why they are important for talent management. It will help aid park and recreation professionals in developing competencies and managing staff with competencies in mind.

Program objectives:

After completing this certificate program, learners should be able to:

  • Define the elements that make up a competency and a competency framework and describe their importance in supervision and management.
  • Ensure staff and volunteers understand and can implement quality service to customers.
  • Discuss the important methods and strategies involved in employee recruitment.
  • Describe ways to monitor employee performance and drivers of employee motivations.
  • Select appropriate communication techniques for engaging with partners, stakeholders, and staff.
  • Develop and sustain cooperative working relationships with team members.

Recommended background:

This certificate program is intended for park and recreation agency employees, but may be applicable to those in similar fields. There are no required prerequisites to take this program.

After completing the content and activities in each course module, you will complete a final quiz to demonstrate your understanding of key course concepts. Upon successful completion of all course module quizzes and assignments, you will be awarded a program certificate of completion.
