Course summary:

This course is about grazing in wilderness as it applies to special provisions of the Wilderness Act of 1964. The course provides a broad overview of the legal framework that supports wilderness grazing, reviews how grazing may impact the land, and introduces the types of plans that are used to manage grazing.

Course objectives:

After completing this course, learners should be able to:

  • Describe how grazing is incorporated into the Wilderness Act.
  • Distinguish between commercial grazing, recreational grazing, and administrative grazing.
  • Define the components of an allotment.
  • Define ephemeral and vacant allotments.
  • Explain the different impacts of these types of allotments on wilderness areas.
  • Give examples of how grazing may impact wilderness.
  • Review how the Congressional Grazing Guidelines are applied.
  • Detail what a Wilderness Manager needs to know about grazing in wilderness.
  • Detail what a Rangeland Management Specialist needs to know about operating in the wilderness.
  • Outline the requirements of an allotment management plan and annual operating plan for an allotment in wilderness.

Recommended background

It is strongly recommended that you complete the free The Wilderness Act of 1964 e-course before beginning this course. Without foundational knowledge of the Wilderness Act, you will not be able to get the most out of this course and could find the content confusing. It is also recommended that you complete the Minimum Requirements Analysis courses.
