Course Introduction

This course is offered by the Center on Community Living and Careers at Indiana University. The course introduces employment services personnel, case managers, transition coordinators and school personnel, family members, and other services personnel on benefits for people with disabilities. This training is an introduction to state and federal benefits that many individuals with disabilities may be eligible to receive. To better serve these individuals, it is important to educate yourself on what these benefits are, who is eligible for each benefit, and where to direct individuals for more specific information. This course is self-paced and runs for six weeks, with the course being asynchronistic, allowing the learner to complete as they would like, in that six-week timeframe.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify the main benefits or assistance that individuals with disabilities receive.
  2. Distinguish between the two Social Security Disability Benefits, Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, and describe some of the work incentives for each benefit.  
  3. Identify other state benefits or assistance that individuals may receive.
  4. Explain some asset-building resources that can help individuals safely save.
  5. Explain where an individual can go for more information on benefits and to access
