Course Introduction

This course provides a foundation for understanding how autism may affect an individual within the context of community. In addition to diagnostic criteria and common characteristics, we explore the neurodiversity movement and how embracing autism as a variation benefits everyone. We apply Universal Design and Universal Design Learning principles for creating inclusive settings across the lifespan.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
    • Describe the history of autism, the self-advocacy movement, and the medical and social models of disability.
    • Identify criteria and characteristics of autism spectrum disorder.
    • Recognize different presentations of ASD and life management strategies.
    • Identify Universal Design principles and practices that promote community inclusion for neurodivergent/autistic members.
    • Discuss cultural and psychosocial factors and their impact on ASD.
    • Identify career preparation and employment strategies for schools and families.
    • Discuss potential strengths of ASD and how individuals can apply these strengths for community living and vocational success.

Enrollment Details

This course will be offered four times each year. The cost is $75.00.

Registration for each course will open in the month prior to training.  Earn professional development credits (CE units, CRCs, PGP hours) upon course completion. The course takes approximately 5 hours to complete.

Upon enrolling, you will receive instructions and the link to Canvas. Note: When you register, you'll receive an email invitation. Be sure to accept that invitation, or Canvas will not allow you to open the course modules.

Trainees can move through content modules at their own pace within the course timeframe. Trainees are allowed to finish the course prior to its conclusion date.
