Course Introduction

This course describes how an autistic individual can successfully transition from high school to a fulfilling adult life. We review characteristics of autism spectrum disorder and explore a variety of perspectives, stigmas, and biases. Our primary focus is on the transition process and how to assist autistic individuals through career decision-making and training toward quality employment.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Define DSM-5 criteria and characteristics of autism spectrum disorder.
  • Name best practices in transition services for young adults with autism. 
  • Recognize the psychosocial factors and their impact on the individual’s success in vocational pursuits.
  • Describe effective career counseling strategies for autistic individuals.
  • State how post-secondary training could be necessary for autistic individuals to pursue their vocational goal and how to promote their success by providing necessary supports.
  • Describe accommodations and other employment considerations for individuals with autism.
  • Using a strengths-based approach, list key strategies an autistic individual and their multidisciplinary team members can use to promote successful employment outcomes.
  • Relate ways to raise employer awareness and promote employer education to successfully hire autistic individuals.

Enrollment Details

This course will be offered four times each year. The cost is $75.00.

Registration for each course will open in the month prior to training. Earn professional development credits (CE units, CRCs, PGP hours) upon course completion. This course takes approximately 5 hours to complete.

Trainees can move through content modules at their own pace within the course timeframe. Trainees are allowed to finish the course prior to its conclusion date.
