Laboratory Ergonomics Training 2025

Course Introduction

This course introduces IU employees to general laboratory ergonomics. Course participants will have an opportunity to learn specific ergonomic risk factors and preventive methods for the following laboratory activities: pipetting; microscopy; microtome/cryostat work; micro-manipulation & fine motor skills; and biosafety cabinets and chemical fume hoods.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the module, you will be able to:

• Understand why ergonomics is important
• Know how to properly set up a workstation
• Know who to contact for an ergonomic evaluation
• Understand ways to reduce ergonomic risk factors associated with the following common laboratory activities:
  • Pipetting
  • Microscopy
  • Microtome/cryostat work
  • Micro-manipulation & fine motor skills
  • Biosafety cabinets and chemical fume hoods

• Complete a few exercises to reduce tension in hands, arms, shoulders and neck
