Course Introduction

This course introduces IU employees to general laboratory ergonomics. Learners will have an opportunity to learn specific ergonomic risk factors and preventive methods for the following laboratory activities: pipetting; microscopy; microtome/cryostat work; micro-manipulation & fine motor skills; and biosafety cabinets and chemical fume hoods.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the module, you will be able to:

  • Understand why ergonomics is important
  • Know how to properly set up a workstation
  • Know who to contact for an ergonomic evaluation
  • Understand ways to reduce ergonomic risk factors associated with the following common laboratory activities:
    • Pipetting
    • Microscopy
    • Microtome/cryostat work
    • Micro-manipulation & fine motor skills
    • Biosafety cabinets and chemical fume hoods
  • Complete a few exercises to reduce tension in hands, arms, shoulders and neck
