Course Introduction

Part 1 | This series of modules is designed to provide an introduction to conceptual frameworks that can be used to support equitable and inclusive teaching practices. The purpose of this series is to help educators learn about introductory ways to create more equitable and inclusive learning spaces through Universal Design for Learning and Culturally Relevant Pedagogy, intentional uses of technology, and the selection of curricular materials that afford assets-based approach.

Each module should take approximately 3 hours to complete. Participants will earn 3 PGP hours and a certificate for each module completed. These modules can be completed as stand-alone modules or as a series with an optional micro-credential assessment that leads to a professional badge.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the modules, you will be able to:

Module 1: Why Use a Design Process? 

  • Recognize the importance of design practices for teaching  
  • Identify current practices in The Design Process  
  • Recognize opportunities for equity and inclusion in The Design Process 

Module 2: What Do We Mean by Inclusion?  

  • Identify how Universal Design for Learning provides a framework for inclusive instruction 
  • Understand what inclusive practices look like 
  • Define the principles of Universal Design for Learning 
  • Describe classroom practices that contribute to inclusive learning environments 
  • Recognize opportunities for inclusivity in my own practice 

Module 3: What are the Relationships Between Culture and Classroom Practice?  

  • Recognize yourself as a cultural human being. 
  • Understand that some cultural attributes are expressed implicitly and explicitly. 
  • Understand how culture connects to teaching practices. 
  • Identify classroom practices that contribute to equitable learning environments. 

Module 4: How Can We Be Intentional with Technology? 

  • Identify opportunities for the use of technology in the classroom.
  • Recognize the ways that students and teachers are currently using technology.
  • Understand how technology can be used for purposes of equity & inclusion. 

Module 5: What Do We Mean by Assets-based Instruction? 

  • Identify assets and deficit mindsets in the context of your classroom.
  • Understand how assets-based approaches are connected to frameworks such as UDL, CRP, and the DEH throughlines.
  • Interpret how assets-based approaches can improve inclusion and equity in your own practice.
