Course Introduction

The purpose of this course is to provide certified child passenger safety technicians with an overview of challenges related to transporting children with special health care needs and to prepare them for the in-person session with Safe Travel for All Children instructors where they will get hands-on experience with the adaptive restraints, work through case studies, identify misuse situations, demonstrate positioning/harnessing in the adaptive restraints, and complete installation of the adaptive restraints.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the modules, you will be able to:

  • Review the importance of safe transportation for children with special health care needs
  • Review issues related to transporting children with special health care needs
  • Examine medical conditions that impact child restraint selection
  • Describe and identify adaptive restraints for children with special health care needs
  • Demonstrate proper positioning/harnessing and installation of the adaptive restraints
  • Demonstrate proper positioning/harnessing and installation of the adaptive restraints
  • Discuss best practices in regards to using conventional car seats or adaptive restraints
  • Understand rehabilitation therapist’s role in assessing child’s positioning and safety needs during transportation
  • Identify restraint misuse observed with children with special health care needs
  • Access resources for transporting children with special health care needs
